High-Cost Medical Care Benefit

Prolonged treatment of a serious illness or injury requires high medical expenses. However, when members of public health insurance plans (such as National Health insurance and Employees’ Health Insurance) pay fees in excess of a specified ceiling at a medical institution or pharmacy, they will be reimbursed the amount in excess as “High-Cost Medical Care Benefit” at a later date so that their financial burden will be eased. The ceiling is determined according to the insurance holder’s age and income. A claim for reimbursement needs to be filed with the insurer.

If you are currently in hospital or hospitalized soon, you can apply for a “Certificate of Eligibility for Reduced Co-payments”. With this certificate, you will only pay up to the ceiling.
